Take a look at Google's SketchUp 3D Models Warehouse. Describe how you can incorporate Google SketchUp in your classroom. Give a specific example. The link to Google's SketchUp and the 3D models Warehouse are on our class's website.

There are so many great lessons you can teach your students using google sketch up. First and foremost teaching the concept of 3-D can be very difficult for young students (I know this from experience) The concept is hard for childre to conceptualize even with manipulatives.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many lesson plans you could design like area and volume. The students could study buildings and community design. Google sketchup can be used for georgraphy, geometry, social studies, architecture. This could be a great "How-to" lesson as well. The kids are learning while having fun which is not easy to do!
In kindergarten, we do a lot of mapping in social studies. We talked about our homes, how many bedrooms we had, where the furniture was in the room, etc. We could use sketchup to actually create a floorplan and layout so that children truly grasp what an aerial view is and then what it looks like from our normal point of view.
ReplyDeleteRachael is correct in 6th grade you teach volume and area in Math and Google Sketch up would be a great extension activity. I had a building next door outside my school window this year and the construction was going on daily. It was annoying but useful when it came time to teach the math lesson on area and perimeter. It gave the kids a live visual. It would have been even better to heve the kids work on Google Sketch up to create diagrams themselves.
ReplyDeleteAnother added concept would be to use Google Sketch up during my memoir lesson in ELA. We read Sandra Cisneros book House on Mango Street. I could have used Google Sketch up and have the kidas create their House on Mango and write about what the neighborhood would be like if they could travel in time. They could become characters and add an element to the storyline.
I could use Google Sketch up in the claasroom to have the class do a collaborative lesson on building the next great city in Google Earth. Children could use Google Earth to search for underdeveloped land where they could build their construction on.(This would also bring global awareness and current events to the classroom). Students would have to research city infrastructure, then work together to develop the actual building/city layout using Google Sketch up.
ReplyDeleteGoogle sketchup will be a helpful tool in my classroom especially when the unit on measurement will be taught. In my last third grade class, some of my students never mastered basic measurement skills. Being able to visualize the different concepts, I believe will be an assess to everyone.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Earth and Google Sketch Up are great tools to use in the classroom. I would use Google Earth to help teach a social studies lesson. I would allow students to visit areas in their local community, as well as visit the seven continents, and the four oceans.
ReplyDeleteI would use Google Sketch Up to help teach geometry lessons. Sketch Up will give student a clearer understanding on three dimensional shapes -- pyramids, and prisms. These tools will benefit our classrooms.
Google sketch up is a great way to incorporate engineering/math into the classroom. I've used a multidisciplinary unit on structures for an advanced first grade cohort that brought in a lot of math, dimensions, science, social studies and engineering. I've had the children create 3d structures of NYC landmarks and of structures to represent a region we've studied. Some of my students don't have strong artistic, tactile skills and these projects were difficult for them. Though there are different mediums for them to use, often those who are frustrated by such activities lose interest. This would be a great alternative as google sketch up offers a bevy of structures the children can manipulate to create their own projects.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Rachael and Naeri; the anmount of lessons that can be done with sketchup are endless. Trying to teach kids about 3d shapes is quite challenging. With sketchup they can see it in a more clear fashion. It is great for social studies and building communites as well. The students can build their own communites and create floor plans.
I'm going to agree with the general consensus of the posts. Sketch Up is a great took to use in the math classroom. Geometric shapes and volume and area would make great lessons. You can have students map their way from home to school. I have done this lesson in social studies using a hard copy of a map, but using the program would allow for more imaginitive lessons.
ReplyDeleteGoogle sketch-up can be you in all content areas in your classroom. Google 3D warehouse gave me so many ideas. In math it can be used to make buildings and use a measurement activity. In reading students can sketch characters and settings from a particular story. In social studies for the 3rd grade we study China ad Africa. So students can sketch different people and different homes from around the world.
